To promote trying to make homes eco-friendly, more than 50 homes in Bristol will open their doors for members of the public to visit in order to demonstrate how to reduce domestic energy consumption and eco-retrofit older properties. The open houses will be part of the UK’s Open House Month and will take place on 11–12th of September 2010.

Allotmenteers Erect Security Fencing Against Vandals
Allotment owners are appealing for more cash to complete a project to protect their allotments from vandals. After a number of attacks took place at the Brierfield allotment site, near Burnley in Lancashire, over recent months, the decision to erect fencing was taken, and the first part of fencing was successfully installed last weekend.
Allotment holders have been affected by break-ins and have had items stolen from their plots, and as some of the gardeners renting allotments at Brierfield also keep geese and chickens at the site, concern has been expressed about the safety of these animals if action wasn’t taken. Read more…

Speaking to the Daily Mail to promote Vocational Qualifications over attending University, Rose Llewellyn, who is the daughter of Sir Roddy Llewellyn, decided that university wasn’t for her and has enrolled on an NVQ level 2 plumbing Course. She explained to the Daily Mail that the call to pursue a vocation rather than academic study came about after doing a bit of DIY around her home. She was sitting with her father in the kitchen and carried out a repair to a leaking tap by replacing a washer. She called it her ‘light-bulb moment’. Read more…

Manchester Police and Council Team Up To Fight Against Burglary
Manchester Police and Manchester City Council are teaming up to take a unique step in making local residents aware of the dangers of theft and burglaries by keeping doors and windows locked or open in their homes. Police and Council staff are hoping that if they can demonstrate how easy it is to leave yourself susceptible to property theft it will encourage people to take the simple yet necessary precautions to protect their belongings after statistics show that one in three properties are robbed through leaving a window or door open.
Flooring Company Receives Hefty Fine
The Environment Agency have handed out a huge fine to a major Evesham flooring contractor following a number of breaches of waste disposal guidelines. Karndean International accepted they had broken industry protocol on at least 9 occasions and pleaded guilty to all charges of failing to comply with packaging waste regulations.
The company, whose offices are registered on Vale Business Park, have been fined a total of £36,000 (£3,300 for each offence committed) and compensation of £3,040. The guidelines broken were the Producer Responsibility Regulations and relate to the flooring company failing to register their business with the Environment Agency or a similar compliance scheme on an annual basis. It emerged that Karndean International had failed to do this for 3 years.

A recent study has revealed that roofers and builders are not taking adequate precautions against the damaging effects from the sun. According to the report as little as one in three roofers does not wear a high enough factor of sun cream whilst working outdoors and being in direct contact with the sun.
Flooring Contractor's Business Expanding After Recession
A flooring contractor in the North East has taken a novel approach to tackling the recession by increasing his staffing numbers and trying to target new markets for the business. With more than two decades of trading under their belts, Reprotec turned over a small profit last year due to major contracts not been resumed, many of these from the construction industry, which is a direct response from the terrible state the nation was left in after the recession. They are however noticing a growth in sales again after securing a £250,000 contract with North Tyneside Police.
