The boiler scrappage scheme, which was introduced by the Government in order to reduce UK carbon emissions enables homeowners in England whose boiler is an inefficient G rated boiler or worse, to apply for a grant of £400 towards the cost of installing a new energy efficient boiler.
Boiler manufacturers, Worcester, who are part of the Bosch group, are backing the Government boiler scrappage scheme by offering a further 12 month guarantee on their boilers.
There are a number of things you can look out for which will indicate whether your boiler is G rated or less:
- gas fired boilers 15 years or older
- oil fired boilers 25 years or older
- a constantly lit pilot light
The above will not definitely mean that you have a G rated boiler and are therefore eligable for a grant, however they are likely indicators. If you know the make and model of your boiler, you can search for your boiler on the Government boiler scrappage eligability database which will tell you whether you can apply for a grant.
If your boiler is eligible, for a grant under the boiler scrappage scheme, you can apply for a voucher which can then be redeemed against a new more energy efficient heating source. When your voucher is issued, it is valid for 12 weeks, however if you don’t use your boiler voucher within this 12 week period, the voucher will become invalid and the funds will be reallocated to other applicants. One voucher is available for each household, however if you do receive a voucher and this is not redeemed against a new energy efficient heating source within the period, another application can be submitted.
You don’t only have to redeem the voucher against a new boiler. If you have a G rated boiler, you can use the £400 voucher against a number of other energy efficient and renewable technologies which will also help reduce your carbon emissions and energy consumption:
- Oil boilers that are A rated or equivalent
- LPG boilers
- Gas boilers
- Biomass boilers
- CHP units (combined heat and power)
- Heat pumps
- Solar thermal technology where a boiler is part of the system
- Boilers which incorporate passive heat recovery devices
Depending on the type of boiler you have fitted as part of your central heating system, you will need to find a reputable tradesperson to carry out the installation. For gas boilers, you will need a Gas Safe registered central heating engineer or plumber, but there are also professional and approved bodies for other types of installers too. If you are installing renewable technologies, your tradesman should be qualified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, and if you are choosing to install heat pumps or biomass technology, look for tradespeople who are registered under a professional trade body such as HETAS or OFTEC.
You can always be sure that you will get a qualified professional central heating specialist or plumber when submitting your enquiry to localtraders.com so if you want to find out whether your boiler is eligable for replacement under the scrappage scheme or need a quote for the installation of a new boiler, submit your details today and we can help you find the ideal tradesperson to meet your needs.
