There are estimated to be over 100 million street lamps in and around the UK, every year on average 3,100 tonnes of waste material is generated from these and until recently this has being destined for landfill sites. Although every single lamp has in it a small amount of mercury the amount of waste means that the hazardous mercury could possibly find its way into the land and in addition our water supply.
The mercury which is generated from only one fluorescent tube could produce up to 30,000 litres of contaminated water which would not be at a safe standard to drink. In The Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 it states that fluorescent tubes are classed as hazardous waste. Local businesses are now looking for ways to recycle and by doing so protecting the environment at the same time.
