Welsh Water Cut Budget For Planned Drainage Improvement Work

Residents in Llanelli who were expecting to see investments of £6 million to improve storm water drainage have seen this figure cut to £2.7 million as the figure that has been publically released by Welsh Water. The original £6m figure was communicated to the Plaid AM, Helen Mary Jones and a prospective candidate for the parliament, Myfanwy Davies, by Welsh Water in November.

The improvement works were meant to provide residents with piece of mind that their homes would be safe from high water levels in sewers during heavy rainfall, something that Jones and Davies have been campaigning for. They feel that investment in the sewer systems is long overdue and a solution to flooding problems in the area is needed to deal with draining water away during and following periods of severe weather.

Since they were advised of the £6 million figure for improving the drainage, Ofwat, the regulating body for the water industry has published price limits that restrict how much firms can charge for water services and the pair believe that the restrictions have had an impact on the budget that Welsh Water have allocated for the sewerage improvement works.
