Skip Hire News and Information

Did you know that you no longer can place a skip directly onto a public highway? If you are needing to place a skip on a public road you must, in advance, apply for a license. This is something that must be carried out by a skip hire company in any given area, such as a skip hire company in Stoke-on-Trent, or a registered building company/contractor. General public and local residents can not apply to local councils. When ordering a skip from a local company they will be fully aware of this and usually include this fee in with the cost of hiring a skip.

If the skip you need is going to be placed on or near to a parking bay that will prevent access most local councils insist on at least 8 days notice so that local road users can be made aware of he suspension, this is called a Bay Suspension Notice. Signs are placed around the bay area that the skip will prevent access to allowing sufficient notice to be given to local road users.

Licenses must be fully updated and displayed on skips and all skips must be legitimately sited in the appropriate area. Local councils have recently stepped up activity of enforcement offices carrying out checks to ensure skips are not only licensed but also removed promptly following the license period.

It is the licensee’s responsibility to ensure that your license complies with all the correct terms and conditions and failure to have this can result in prosecution. If you fail to remove your skip on time or place it on the highway without a valid license and parking bay suspension, local councils are removing skips and recharge the cost to you. This can work out extremely costly as well as running the risk of prosecution.

So to stay legal and not run the risk of heavy fines and the inconvenience of having a skip removed make sure when your ordering a skip your discuss licensing and the need of parking bay suspension orders if your blocking access to car parking spaces.
