Helpful Hints on Hiring A Skip

When you undertake any home improvements there will be rubbish that will need be removed and with most local councils now adopting stricter policies on what and how much waste people can dispose of in their rubbish bin, hiring a skip is a sensible option.

So how much do skip hire companies vary in price, product and service?  Is it worth getting quotes when you are considering hiring a skip? The answer is definitely yes. Skip hire companies do differ in price and service so getting 4-5 quotes can result in huge savings.  During this week we will look at some helpful hints and the differences on offer when hiring a skip.

Previously we wrote about the types of skips there are to hire midi, mini and maxi. Each skip accommodates varying amounts of waste but one important thing you must consider is whether you can ’skip’ the items you’re thinking of ‘skipping’. Below is a list of the most common items skip hire companies will not let you deposit into a skip:

Fridges/Freezers, Tyres, Paint Cans, TV’s/Monitors, Asbestos, clinical/Medical Waste, Florescent Tubes, Solvents, Liquids, Oil, Batteries, Plasterboard, Hazardous/Toxic Material, Gas Cylinders

If any of the above mentioned items are found in your skip, it would usually mean you will be charged separately as the skip hire company will have to dispose of the items themselves. If you’re unsure, check with the company beforehand to save yourself incurring potential surcharges.

If the waste you are removing can be loaded quickly into a skip, some skip hire companies will offer a service where they will wait for you to load the skip and then remove it there and then, commonly referred to as ‘wait and load’.  This would then void the need to buy a license, further saving you money. Another tip is to shop around as not every company offers this service and there are considerable differences in costs, some companies have set fees for 15 minute and 30 minute waits.

So by thinking carefully about what you need to dispose of and how long you actually need a skip for are two easy ways of potentially saving money when hiring a skip. Using localtraders.com to get local skip hire companies to call you and discuss your needs is an even better hassle free way to start your savings.
