Greener Decorating – Eco Paint and Clay Paint

Painting your home can be a long and laborious task, often putting rooms out of action while furniture is piled up under dust sheets and relocated to different rooms of the house to give space to paint. Applying multiple coats of paint can often be a pain too, because the job takes even longer, but if an even paint finish is desired, or if a bright coloured paint was used for a previous coat, you can’t always avoid second or even third coats of paint.

Most people know the familiar smell of a freshly painted room, but that is not necessarily a good thing. The smell given off by the paint is due to the chemicals contained in the paint, or VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Apart from the smell not being particularly appealing, the fumes given off are not good for your health, and many people are starting to look towards products like clay paints and eco paints for a more natural paint option.

Clay paints are made using, as the name suggests, clay for the base which then bonds to your wall. Clay paints, like other eco paints, are usually coloured using natural pigments derived from plants or minerals rather than the synthetic dyes used to colour the popular brands such as Crown and Dulux. As clay paints do not contain chemicals, you are also avoiding the fumes and VOC content to the paint you apply to your walls.

Due to the increasing popularity of environmentally friendly paint, the ranges of products by companies such as Earthborn, whose range includes clay paints, egg shell, emulsion and casein paint, are becoming available through more suppliers. The main downside to eco paints is the additional cost compared to conventional oil based paints so unfortunately they may not be an option for everybody’s budget but if you’re eco retrofitting or just want to make your home greener, eco paint is a simple and effective place to start.
