Neighbours Protest Over Security Fence

South Oxfordshire district council gave Olivia Harrison permission to install new security defences around her mansion in Henley-on-Thames after an ongoing battle to protest against the extreme security measures she had in place. The mansion is currently protected by a 985 meters of razor wire fence which was installed after a brutal attack at the property in 1999 when a schizophrenic Liverpudlian broke into the property and stabbed the musician.

After the near death experience George and Olivia Harrison decided to install the razor wire fence as an extra security measure for protection. The local residents had strong views about the fence and some said it looked like a war zone. Rodney Bewes protested against the fence as his cat had got caught up in the razor wire fence on a couple of occasions and resulted in thousands of pounds in vet bills. He wrote a letter into the local council to object against her new plans to upgrade the security fence.

Local neighbours stated that there are a lot of lovely properties around the area, nobody wants their property to get broken into, but they questioned whether razor wire was necessary. However even the though permission had been granted they decided to install a security fence without the razor wire. Rodney Bewes and local residents were delighted when the new fence went up without the sharp edged addition.

Fire Fighters Call For Common Sense

People across the country have been lapping up the sun and good weather the past couple of weeks following a glorious heat wave. Thousands of people have been having garden parties and the highlight of a good party is always a barbeque. With people drinking and enjoying themselves a little bit of common sense can sometimes go out of the window and that was certainly the case in Cove on Sunday. Rushmoor fire station had to respond to an incident on Haskins Road after a fire started there which destroyed a garden fence and left extensive damage to roof tiles and guttering.

A disposable barbeque was placed into a wheelie bin without the user completely extinguishing the embers. A fire quickly started and spread to the wooden fence which in turn ignited a gas and electricity mains box situated at the side of the house. Fire crews arrived but the damage was extensive and the repairs will run into thousands of pounds. The only good news from the incident was that nobody was injured but fire crews have warned that next time the outcome could be a lot worse.

The public are being reminded to take extra care when dealing with barbeques and other fire related products found in gardens such as wood burners and chimineas. With the ground tinder dry following the good weather one spark is all it needs to set off a chain reaction which could easily result in disaster.

Solihull Teen Arrested After a String of Arson Attempts

A series of fires in a local park, has led to the arrest of a fourteen year old Solihull boy for arson following suspicious attacks. Damage to garden furniture, sheds, and garden fences have led to the arrest of the Lyndon teenager, for starting the grass fires in the local area.

It is believed that youths are collecting dried twigs and grass amongst other things, stacking them up against garden fences and setting them alight. The worst of the incidents include occurrences of fires spreading into the gardens of local residents causing damage to their properties. A spokesman from the local neighbourhood police has stated that these incidents cannot be dismissed, and the people responsible are being actively pursued. There are also a number of operations going on, to help to catch them.

Local residents are also being asked to report anything they feel suspicious. There have been several incidents, including one such, where a local teenager ignited a spray can, using it as what can only be described as a flame thrower, which could cause deadly damaging results. The local neighbourhood police are also travelling around the local schools, addressing the dangers of fires and how deadly they can be. They will also be told of the offences they will be committing, should they ever try such stunts as these.

Each year, senseless arson attacks kill around 700 people, whilst destroying 100,000 buildings, causes thousands of pounds worth of damage to buildings, garden furniture and wooden fences, and costs more than £1 million pounds worth of damage.

Security In The Neighbourhood

In a small town in Somerset, CCTV and security lighting are going to be used to combat the effects of anti social behaviour as reported by a local paper. The article explained how thousands of pounds had initially been granted to put up 6ft high security fencing around a troubled area to stop local youths from wreaking havoc in the area.

Locals had offered to help pay for the security but hopes fell short when a local action team advised that gating off of the are was unfortunately not going to happen as it was a complex legal matter. Now residents and local police are looking into using the funding to install security lighting and CCTV to deter the youths from gathering in such areas.

CCTV and security lighting can play a huge part in making inner city zones and troubled spots a safer place as the highly visible deterrent often puts off people from gathering and if they do local authority’s can replay the video evidence in court often making prosecution easier and quicker. As CCTV can be installed almost anywhere it is often a much more viable option than other forms of security such as security fencing, barriers or other forms of static security and because it can be manned 24 hours a day if anything does happen then the police can be called instantly often dispersing any trouble before it begins.

Residents Seek Fencing

Selections of residents living in bungalows in the Dewsbury area of West Yorkshire are appealing for fencing around their homes. Last week, local resident Eddie Barber from Spen Valley Road had a nasty scare from yobs, as they dumped an old carpet by his front door, and set fire to it. The 79 year old resident who is deaf couldn’t hear the commotion through the night, and wasn’t aware of anything happening, until he awoke the next morning, and saw the mess they had caused.

To make matters worse, as the carpet was dumped under his window, and due to the sheering heat, it also cracked one of his windows. Among many residents in the area, Eddie Barber and his neighbour haven’t physically got their properties fenced off – a sure target for young thugs wanting to cause havoc. There is also a selection of other bungalows in the area that have recently had fencing erected, which seem to have cut down the problem. This is just a number of problems the residents seem to be facing, as rubbish is regularly being dumped into the gardens of those not fenced off, and locals drinking and being a general nuisance outside these pensioners’ homes.

A spokesman for the local neighbouring council added that these similar incidents are few and far between, but are complying by giving everyone the fencing requested, adding security and peace of mind for local residents. The bungalows in the area are slowly all being fenced off, but due to the cost of the work, it will have to be completed bit by bit.

Erecting a Fence – Putting in Fence Posts

If you’ve decided you want a new fence or have moved to a new home and want some privacy from neighbours or want to secure the garden for children or pets, once you have decided on the type of fence panels you wish to use, you will need to find work out how many panels and fence posts you will need. To calculate post lengths and how many fence panels you will use you need to remember a couple of major factors.

Decide firstly on the height of your fence because this can determine the length of your posts. If using wooden posts always add an additional 2ft to your fence posts e.g. if you want your fence at 5ft then you need 7ft fence posts. The reason being you need to bury the wooden posts 2ft into the ground to add extra support, especially if setting your posts in concrete.

Then to decide how many fence panels and posts you need, first calculate the length of the area you are fencing and measure both the length of one fence panel and the width of one of the fence posts. The measurements from the fence panel and fence post added together will give an accurate number of panels and posts required to fence your garden or yard.

Divide the distance being fenced by the total length for the fence post and panel and you should have the correct amount of panels and posts you will require. Remember you may need an additional post for the end of the run of fencing to provide a neat edge to your garden. have chosen.

You can then begin putting the posts in. Mark out the area you are looking to place the fence, using a string line and pegs. Always check that there are no water pipes or power cables running through your garden before starting – you don’t want to cause problems with burst pipes or severed electric cabling!

Following your markings, you need to dig out holes for where you want each post to be, remembering that each hole needs to 2ft deep and 3 times wider than the fence post. After jamming the posts into place, you are ready to insert the concrete, however you may want to insert some hardcore at the base to support your posts first. Fill the hole to ground level and then smooth over with a trowel before moving on to your next post. Once the concrete is dry and the posts are stable, the fence panels can be attached to the posts to complete your new fence.

Choosing the Right Type of Fence Posts for Your New Fence

The first step towards replacing your old broken and insecure fencing is to choose your fence panels and the height that you want your fencing to come to. Once that decision has been made however, deciding which posts you are to use when erecting a fence is equally important.

There are a number of options available, but some are more practical than others depending on the type of fence you are planning to erect in your garden:

concrete posts
wooden posts
metal posts

Most posts are available in a range of different heights, but you need to bear in mind that in some cases, there may be restrictions in place about where you can erect fencing and the maximum height that fencing can be, for example in conservation areas or if your new fence will block out light to a neighbour’s garden. If in doubt, it is always best to speak to a local planning officer at your local council.

Concrete posts

Concrete posts are the most durable choice for fence posts. They provide a lot of strength to the fence and will withstand all weather conditions. If choosing this post then you will probably need to get some help erecting them due the weight, but they can be combined with concrete gravel boards for a co-ordinated look and to protect your fence panels from moisture in the ground, prolonging their life.

Wood posts

Wooden post blend in a lot better with the overall look of the fence, but you will need to plant them deeper into the ground to provide the same strength as concrete, and they will need more maintenance work over the years as they will rot. There are a couple of options available to you to reduce the likelihood of your posts rotting however. You may want to add a bit of concrete to the bed of the posts to reduce the amount of the surface that is exposed to moisture, or you could use tanalised timber or treat the wooden posts with a wood preservative before installing them.

If you choose tanalised timber, the chemicals used in the tanalising process such as arsenic, and be leached into the surrounding soil, so you should avoid using tanalised posts near to vegetable patches, especially if you want to try organic gardening.

Metal fence posts

Metal fence posts are the easiest of the 3 to erect and are a good, long lasting option as they will not rot. They are better suited to metal fencing however as they can look a little harsh or out of place with wooden fence panels, unless you are looking to create a contemporary look to your garden with stainless steel metal water features or metal sculptures.

Once you have decided on the type of fence and posts you are going to use, the next step is to calculate how many fence posts you will need to erect your fencing around the perimeter of your garden or along your driveway or yard.

Erecting a Garden Fence – Different Types of Fence Panels

First and foremost when erecting a fence the obvious and perhaps most important thing to do is to decide what type of fence will suit your needs. There are 4 main types of fencing that you can use:

closeboard
palisade
overlap
trellis

By understanding what each of these types of fencing look like and are suitable for, you will be able to get the best type of fence to suit your needs.

Closeboard fencing is made from overlapped boards of timber. Closeboard fence panels provide complete privacy and are the strongest of the 4 main types of fence.

Palisade fencing is your more traditional looking sort of fence. This is a type of picket fence which, unlike closeboard fence panels, offer both visibility and also security in equal amounts.

Overlap fencing is similar to closeboard panels in that they are constructed from overlapping boards of timber, but they overlap horizontally whereas closeboard overlaps are vertical. Again, like closeboard panels, overlap fencing offers maximum privacy and security by screening off your garden from prying eyes.

Trellis fencing can be used in two ways; on its own or built in front or above other fence panels. On its own, trellis offers security, but privacy levels are low due to its diamond/square shaped cuts. It does have the benefit of providing a good framework for growing climbing plants up which can increase the privacy of your garden by blocking out the spaces in between the wooden laths.

£628k Isle of Man Airport Fencing Project Underway

Contractors have begun installing a £628k perimeter fence around the airport on the Isle of Man in line with plans drawn up by the Department for Transport in 2005. The plans for the fence installation were originally proposed when it was found that sections of fencing were broken or damaged, leaving the perimeter of the airfield insecure. In addition, a stile crossing the wall of the airfield enabled public access to the airfield itself.

The work to erect fencing around the site began yesterday and will stretch 3.7 miles with areas of the airport that need to be protected by high security fencing being surrounded with concrete fence posts that are 2.8 metres high, with a layer of barbed wire as an additional deterrent to trespassers. Metal fence posts with lower level metal fencing will provide a secure boundary around other areas of the airport perimeter as a cheaper option where high security isn’t such an issue.

The high cost of installing the airport security fencing has resulting in criticism being directed at the Department for Transport, however airport director, Ann Reynolds maintains that the benefits of providing additional safety and security justify the cost, saying that the current inadequate security leave those using the airport vulnerable because of the “number of trespassers” using the airfield as a short cut.

The work comes at a time when the airport is seeing other major work being done, including the building of a promontory built using stone imported from Norway which will extend into the sea. The airport’s runway end safety areas (RESAs) are also being extended in order to comply with safety standards that have been recommended to be put in place internationally. The airport development work will include a range of other groundwork and improvements including:

new car park and pavement construction
lighting
drainage works
footways
planting and landscaping
utility works
barrier systems and pay meters

The work should improve the aesthetics of the airport as well as providing sufficient additional resources to handle the demand the facility is put under, especially at busy times such as school holidays.
