Are you in the Know?

Thinking of having a shaving socket installed in your bathroom or maybe an extractor fan to take away the excess humidity, relatively minor home improvements or upgrades that over the course of owning a home most people undertake with little or no consideration.  These types of bathroom installations and upgrades could result in you facing prosecution!!! Few home owners realise this readl, on for more information.

In the world we live in everybody knows there is more and more legislation, red tape, however what few home owners realise is that this applies to them when adding electrical appliances in and around the home. Recent studies have found that around 45% of home owners were unaware of the need to inform their local authorities building control office both before and after work has been carried out. This applies both internally and externally when having such things as shaving sockets fitted, extra light switches and fixtures installed. Outside of the home if you’re thinking of having a relaxing hot tub installed to your newly landscaped garden this must be checked too; even lighting installed in outside sheds, garages and greenhouse must be fully tested and inspected and if home owners fail to do this they could be leaving themselves very open and venerable.  Not only is it classed as illegal but the dangers are obvious for any electrical work not carried out by a suitable fully qualified electrician or plumber.

Research carried out shows fewer than 2 out of 10 people when considering home improvements source a professional tradesperson such as plumbers or electricians to carry out the work.  If your trade’s person is a member of NAPIT’s competent person’s scheme then they do not need external bodies in to test their work once carried out meaning they have been deemed fit and qualified to carry out the electrical or plumbing work safely that you require. Think long and hard before going on a friend’s recommendation of a certain tradesperson, if only, is an easy thing to say after the event. We recommend you speak to a few professionals before making your decisions giving you and informed choice and preventing possible prosecution.
